Create a data connection

From the Data connections page, you can create a data connection to ingress data from an external source, using an AVEVA adapter, Edge Data Store, CONNECT flows, or a custom OMF application into a site or staging area. For CONNECT flows, you can also select to egress data from CONNECT.

As part of the data connection process, a client credential client is created with a secret and the necessary role assignment that enables the application to authenticate with CONNECT, streamlining the setup process. Because the client secret is shown only once and cannot be retrieved later, be sure to copy all values to a secure location immediately. You must then provide these credentials to the device or application so it can authenticate when accessing CONNECT.

To create a data connection for an AVEVA Agent, you must use the configuration utility that is packaged with the respective agent install kit. For more information, see Download data connection products.

To create a data connection for the Engineering data pipeline, you must configure a service instance to ingress data from AVEVA Document Connector or 3DVis Cloud Streaming Service. For more information, see Create service instance.

Prerequisites

Before creating a data connection, you must have access to the site or staging area where the data will be stored.

To create a data connection for AVEVA Adapters, Edge Data Store, or a custom application

1. In the navigation rail, select Data connections.

2. Select the Systems tab, then select Create data connection.

3. Review the information page, then select Next.

4. Select one of the following types of data connections:

   • AVEVA Adapter

   • AVEVA Edge Data Store

   • CONNECT flows

   • Custom OMF Application

5. If you select Flows, select an option for using this connection:

   • Write data to CONNECT

   • Read data from CONNECT

   • Read & write data to or from CONNECT

6. In the Name your new connection box, enter a name for the connection and the associated client-credential client.

   This name appears in the Clients page and serves as the identifier for both the data connection and the client within CONNECT, making it straightforward to locate and manage. We recommend that you use the actual device’s name because it creates a clear association between the client and the physical or virtual device it represents, improving traceability and long-term maintainability.

7. Select Continue.

8. Select whether your data comes from a Single real-world site or Multiple real-world sites.

9. Select the site or staging area from the drop-down list.

10. Select Continue.

11. Review the Summary to verify your configurations.

    If you need to make corrections, either select the applicable Edit link or Cancel the wizard and start again.

12. Select Create to create the connection and generate the client credentials.

13. Copy the client information to a secure location.

14. Select Close.
