Histogram

The histogram chart shows how numeric values are distributed across their range. It splits a span of values into a set of bins that each represent an interval of values, then counts how many data points fall into each interval. The resulting bin counts show where values are concentrated, providing a view of the data’s density across different ranges, and help reveal the overall shape of the distribution, though the appearance depends on the chosen number of bins.

Configure the following properties for this content item:
-
In the Basic tab:
-
Follow asset context - When this is enabled:
-
If this content is in a dashboard, it uses the dashboard's asset context as the asset for asset stream ref data. For details, see Create a new dashboard.
-
If this content is in an experience, it uses the navigation item's asset reference as the asset for asset stream ref data. For details, see the Add content to a pane section in Add content to panes in your navigation items.
This property only affects asset stream ref data; it has no effect if the content item is configured with stream data.
-
-
Follow time context - When this is enabled:
-
If this content is in a dashboard, it uses the dashboard's time context as the time range for the data it displays. For details, see Create a new dashboard.
-
If this content is in an experience, it uses the time selected in the time selector content item as the time range for the data it displays. For details, see Add a time selector.
-
-
Time - If Follow time context is disabled, select the time range for the data displayed in the content item.
-
Add data - Select data items to include in this content item. You can search for data items by name, by filter, or both.
-
To search by name, enter a value in the Search for data field.
-
To apply filters, select
to view and select filters. Select
to accept your selected filters and return to the previous search panel.
-
To add a single data item, select that item's name. To add multiple data items, check the box for each, then select Add data.
-
For stream or asset stream references, selecting the item’s name expands its list of properties and selects Value only. Selecting the checkbox expands the list and selects all properties. Select or clear properties as needed.
-
-
-
In the Advanced tab:
-
Title - The title that displays for this content item. This property is only available in grid dashboards; content items do not display titles in canvas dashboards or experiences.
-
Show legend - Display the legend.
-
Legend position - The position of the legend.
-
X-axis:
-
Range - A range of values to be displayed within the x-axis. Auto automatically sets the range based on the minimum and maximum data point values within the time range. Custom allows you to set a custom range. When this option is selected, use the Min and Max fields to set the range.
-
-
Y-axis:
-
Show - The scale used for the histogram’s y-axis. Count displays the number of data points in each bin (with the tallest bar corresponding to the highest bin count). Percent of total displays each bin’s share of the full dataset as a percentage (with the tallest bar corresponding to the highest percentage).
-
-
Bin count - The number of bins (value intervals) shown in the histogram. Bins divide the full range of values into adjacent, non-overlapping intervals, and each data point is counted into the bin whose interval contains its value. Increasing the bin count makes the intervals narrower (more detail); decreasing it makes them wider (more aggregation).
-
Bands - Reference ranges drawn over the histogram from a start value to an end value to highlight important zones (for example, normal, caution, or redline operating ranges). They don’t change how data is binned. They add context so you can quickly see where the distribution falls relative to those thresholds. To add bands, select Add
, enter a Band name, and enter a Start value and End value.
-
Reference lines - A line drawn on a chart at a specified value to call out a meaningful threshold or benchmark (such as a target, limit, or average) for visual comparison against the plotted data. To add lines, select Add ,
enter a Reference line name, and enter a Value.
-
Show normal distribution curve - When enabled, the histogram calculates a best-fit normal distribution from your dataset (using its mean and standard deviation) and draws the bell curve over the histogram.

Edit, hide, or remove data
After a stream or asset stream ref has been added to the content item, use the buttons to the right of it to edit, hide, or remove it.

-
Edit: Change the name that displays in the content item for the stream or asset stream ref.
-
Hide/Unhide: Hide or unhide the stream or asset stream ref.
-
Remove: Remove the stream or asset stream ref from the content item.
Note: Hiding, unhinding, and removing data tags affects X-axis scaling when Range is set to Auto.
