Understand license provisioning for Data Archive

Provisioning a valid license for Data Archive is an essential part of a successful deployment. Proper licensing ensures that Data Archive is deployed as intended, and is supported by AVEVA as per the license parameters of your licensing agreement.

The components required to license Data Archive are:

  • Machine Signature File (MSF)

An MSF is necessary to generate a Data Archive license file (pilicense.dat) on the My License Activation (MLA) website. The MSF contains machine hardware and software configuration information specific to the host machine that generates the MSF. AVEVA uses this information for the purpose of delivering a unique license file for that specific machine.

  • My Products page

The Customer Portal displays all of your AVEVA™ PI System™ products. The My Products page provides the user interface for the process of generating your license file specific to the host machine. The My Products page displays the hardware and software information registered for your deployment, and that same information is used in the resulting license file.

  • pilicense.zip file

The My Products website generates a zip file (pilicense.zip) based on the MSF you provide. This resulting zip file is downloadable onto your host machine, and contains: the license file for your machine (pilicense.dat), license readme PDF, and a manifest file. The license readme PDF contains information about the license file. The manifest file lists the content of your license file.

  • License file

A license file (pilicense.dat) enables Data Archive to operate in accordance with the license parameters of your licensing agreement with AVEVA. You are required to have a valid license file in order to operate Data Archive. Generate a new license file for new installations of Data Archive, as well as for existing Data Archive deployments where there has been licensing updates, or some other maintenance that causes a machine mismatch.

Configuring a license for Data Archive is a multi-step process, as shown:
