The following flow chart offers a high-level overview of the entire installation at a glance. Related tasks are grouped together into phases of installation.

There are four phases that comprise the Data Archive installation process. Each phase contains tasks that achieve specific results relevant to that particular stage of installation. The four phases of installation are:
-
Pre-installation
The first phase of installation focuses on the planning and preparation essential to ensure a successful installation. This phase involves such tasks as: selecting a deployment model, ensuring compatibility for the server hardware and operating system, opening a port for communication with the network, and preparing the necessary license files.
If you plan to use OpenID Connect (OIDC) for claims-based authentication, you will need to complete these steps prior to installation:
-
Configure the AVEVA Identity Manager server as your identity service. See Install the AVEVA Identity Manager.
-
Create the required server certificate for enabling Transport Layer Security (TLS). This certificate should be trusted on all client nodes connecting to this Data Archive.
-
-
Installation
The second phase of installation involves using the install wizard or command line to install the Data Archive server on the host computer.
In your Data Archive installation, the wizard allows you to take one or more of the following actions:
-
Enable TLS certificates and OIDC for claims-based authentication. This wizard view will be shown for all new installations of Data Archive 2024. You have the option to skip TLS certificate selection and defer configuration until after the installation completes.
-
Install the Set up PI to CONNECT Agent, which is used to transfer on-prem PI System data to the CONNECT data services cloud portal. This view is shown by default for all new installations of PI Data Archive or when the PI to CONNECT feature is selected for installation. Since the payload for the agent is downloaded, the wizard view confirms that the download is accessible and allows you to opt out of the download.
-
-
Post-installation
The third phase of installation focuses on verifying and setting up your newly-installed Data Archive server for use in your data infrastructure. In this phase of the install, you verify that the installation was successful, and that the related services are running on your host computer. Some of the initial configurations include configuring nightly backup jobs and setting tuning parameters for your deployment.
Additionally, if you have installed the PI to CONNECT Agent, you will need to connect to CONNECT data services and configure the agent before transferring on-prem data to the cloud. An Internet connection is required.
If you have set up TLS certificates and OIDC, you will need to register PI System components with the AVEVA Identity Manager.
-
Connecting an interface
The fourth phase of installation involves connecting a PI interface to your newly-installed Data Archive server, the source of incoming data for Data Archive.
For Data Archive collective deployments: If you want to deploy your Data Archive server as part of a collective, you must first perform the installation and post-installation tasks on the primary server. Afterwards, perform the same tasks on each secondary Data Archive server within your collective.
