AVEVA™ PI Server Installation and Configuration (PI Server 2024 R2)

Phase 2: Installation

  • Last UpdatedOct 03, 2025
  • 2 minute read

The second phase of the installation process centers around installing the Data Archive server onto your host computer using the PI Server install kit. By default, the PI to CONNECT Agent is included with a new Data Archive installation. The agent is an on-prem component you can use to transfer your PI Server data from Data Archive and an AF server to the CONNECT data services cloud portal. Additional configuration of the agent is required after installation.

During installation, you have the option to enable TLS certificates for encryption and PI trust connections. Certificate selection is required to use OpenID Connect (OIDC) for claims-based authentication. OIDC can be set up later as well.

At the time of the PI Server 2024 release, the PI to CONNECT agent does not support connection to the PI Server with OIDC. Since the latest agent is downloaded from the CONNECT data services portal, agent features may change over time, even when installed with the same PI Server install kit. Always refer to the latest PI to CONNECT Agent documentation for the most up-to-date information on features.

Alternatively, you can install Data Archive using the command line. See Install or upgrade through the command line.

Note: If you are planning on deploying Data Archive as a collective, install the primary server first. Then, install each secondary Data Archive server in your collective.

What is not installed with a Data Archive installation

PI AF Link Subsystem, PI Alarm Subsystem, PI Performance Equation Scheduler, and PI Batch Subsystem are NOT installed by default. In addition, earlier versions of PI Data Archive installed PI Module Database Builder, PI Performance Monitor Interface, PI Ping Interface, PI SNMP Interface, and PI TCP Response Interface, but the current install kit does not include them by default.

PI Batch Generator Interface is no longer included in this install kit, but is available as a separate download. To include any of these in the installation, select it before continuing with your installation.
