AVEVA™ PI Server Installation and Configuration (PI Server 2024 R2)

Troubleshoot the connection with PSE

If you encounter problems trying to connect PI System Explorer to PI Analysis Service, use this procedure to examine potential causes.

  1. Ensure that PI Analysis Service is running.

If it is not running, PI System Explorer cannot establish contact with PI Analysis Service.

  2. Ensure that PI System Explorer is attempting to contact PI Analysis Service on the correct host by hovering over the error message: Could not connect to the PI Analysis Service.

The tooltip shown here provides more information about the PI Analysis Service host.

A screenshot of a PI System Explorer tooltip that displays additional information about the status of the PI Analysis Service.

    • If the tooltip indicates there is no host, you probably do not have permission to read this information from the Configuration database. The account you are using must be able to read the element in the OSIsoft\PIANO\AnalysisService\ServiceConfiguration directory. Typically, the Everyone account has read access to all information in the Configuration database.

    • If the hover help shows an unexpected host, you must investigate further. For example, was PI Analysis Service moved? Did someone install a new instance accidentally?

Note: Read permission on both the Configuration database and the four elements in the OSIsoft\PIANO\AnalysisService\ServiceConfiguration path is required to access the PI Analysis Service.

  3. From the client host, use Powershell or Telnet to determine whether you can access port 5463 on the PI Analysis Service host.

If you cannot reach port 5463, network connectivity does not exist. Some typical causes are:

    • A firewall is blocking access.

    • A network load balancer requires a load balancing rule to forward incoming traffic on port 5463 to the PI Analysis Service host.

  4. Ensure that the PI System Explorer user can be authenticated on the PI Analysis Service host.

    • If you are connecting from an untrusted domain or workgroup, ensure that you are running PI Analysis Service 2.7.0 or later.

    • Check Windows Credential Manager to ensure that bad credentials are not being submitted when connecting to the PI Analysis Service host.
