Work orders

A work order represents a request for some quantity of an item to be produced. A work order is uniquely identified by its ID. Once completed, a work order is not intended to be executed again.

Work orders can be created in the following ways:

  • From a process. Processes are created and configured in MES Client. Work orders created from a process will include a bill of material (BOM) and job specifications.

  • From a production line. Lines are created and configured in MES Web Portal. Unlike work orders created from a process, work orders created from a line have no BOM and no job specifications. There is the produced item of the work order and the quantities (starting and required).

Work orders can also be submitted to MES from an external system, such as a manufacturing resource planning (MRP) or enterprise resource planning (ERP) system, or created in MES Client.

To be executed, the work order must comprise a set of jobs that represent the complete set of operations required to manufacture that product from ingredients or components. These ingredients or components may have been purchased or manufactured as the result of a previous work order. When a work order is created from a process or a line, MES also creates the necessary jobs for all entities associated with the process or line unless 0% flows into the job.
