Split a utilization event

You can split an event into two events so that one of them can be assigned a different utilization reason. For example, if it was discovered that an entity had actually been down for a portion of a Running event, the Running event can be split and a downtime utilization reason applied to the new event.
-
One of the two events will retain the same reason as the original event. You will assign a different reason to the other, new event.
-
The comment stays with the existing event. The comment for the new event will be blank.
Split a utilization event
-
Select the event that you want to split in the grid or chart.
-
Select the Split button or link.
The Split Util Reason dialog appears.
On this dialog, you can select the new reason from the Hierarchy tab:

or the Treeview tab:

-
Select the Split Left or Split Right direction button to determine whether the new utilization reason precedes or follows the event being split.
-
Set the time point at which to split the event by doing one of the following:
-
Use the slider.
-
Manually enter the time point in the date/time control that is just above the slider.
If you manually enter the time point, select
or selecting somewhere outside of the form to refresh the slider position.

Note that the displayed times are in the browser's local time. Events that cross a Daylight Savings Time (DST) boundary might require using the slider to set the split time point.
-
-
Select a reason for the new event.
-
(Optional) Type a comment for the new event.
-
Select Split.
Split increment used to set the split time
The time increment by which the split time can be changed is set by the Split control's Split Increment property. By default, the increment is 1 second. However, the setting might be different for the instance of the control that you are using on the Split Utilization Reason dialog. For example, if the split increment is 10 seconds, then using the slider will change the split time in 10‑second increments. Also, the shortest duration for the existing or new event will be 10 seconds.
Rounding to the closest split increment when entering split time manually
When you manually enter the split time point, the split time will be rounded to the closest split increment from the initial split time point.
For example, let's say the original event duration is as follows and the split increment is set to 10 seconds:
Start: 2/25/2020 6:47:15 AM
End: 2/25/2020 6:49:40 AM
Initially, the split time will be rounded by 10 seconds from the actual mid-point of 2/25/2020 6:48:27 AM to 2/25/2020 6:48:35 AM.
-
If you manually enter a value from 2/25/2020 6:48:26 AM to 2/25/2020 6:48:29 AM, the actual split time will be rounded by 10 seconds from the initial split time to 2/25/2020 6:48:25 AM.
-
If you manually enter a value from 2/25/2020 6:48:30 AM to 2/25/2020 6:48:34 AM, the actual split time will be rounded to the initial split time, 2/25/2020 6:48:35 AM.
Split increment and slider resolution
The screen resolution and existing event duration can cause the smallest increment of the slider movement to be greater than the control's Split Increment setting. This can occur if the event duration is much longer than the split increment (e.g., the event duration is 2 months and the split increment is 1 second, which is the default increment). If this occurs, the split increment for the slider is increased so that the smallest slider movement (1 pixel) represents the slider's automatically adjusted split increment (e.g., 10 seconds). This adjustment is indicated by a warning message that appears above the slider control.
If the split increment has been automatically adjusted to be longer and you want to specify a split time that cannot be set by the slider, enter the time manually.
Note that manually entered split times are subject to rounding by the control's split increment as described above. For example, say the split control's Split Increment setting is 600 seconds (10 minutes) and the slider's split increment has been automatically adjusted to 20 minutes. Moving the slider will cause the split time to change by 20-minute increments from the initial split time. Entering the split time manually will cause the split time to be rounded by 10-minute increments from the initial split time.
