Configuration suggestions for network load balancing

If you use a software-based network load balancer (NLB), such as the Windows solution for network load balancing, you must assign a name and IP address to the virtual cluster that represents PI AF Servers. A DNS entry may also be necessary depending on your IT requirements. Because you are setting up a virtual cluster and not an actual object in the domain or Active Directory, a DNS administrator may have to perform these actions.

For example, the objects in the network might be named as follows:

Server 1: AFPRIMARY.domain.com
Server 2: AFSECONDARY.domain.com
NLB "cluster": AFSERVER.domain.com

A hardware NLB would have the same name and IP requirements, but because the NLB is an actual hardware node, it must actually be added to the domain. The DNS would update accordingly.

When users want to connect to PI AF Server, they connect to the cluster. For example, in the structure shown above, users connect to AFSERVER.domain.com. The load balancer will then connect the user to a PI AF application service.
