Buffering and High Availability

Hardware load balancers and PI System products

Hardware load balancers provide advanced capabilities for ensuring your infrastructure is highly available. You can set up a hardware load balancer to monitor AVEVA PI Vision application servers and AF servers and adjust load balancing accordingly. Load balancing provides several benefits:

  • Server offload

Functionality for handling high availability is moved from the server to an application network infrastructure device.

Hardware load balancing is usually managed by an application delivery controller or an application accelerator. These devices relieve the load on servers by handling such functions as SSL termination and acceleration, TCP multiplexing, cookie encryption and decryption, compression, caching, URI rewriting, and application security.

  • Highly configurable failover and failback

Gives you precise control of when a server is placed into or taken out of service.

  • Alerts

You can configure the load balancer to notify you when a server is placed into or taken out of service.

  • Change control

You can take a server out of service for maintenance without affecting the availability of your application.
