Buffering and High Availability

PI to PI installation location

You can install PI to PI on a Data Archive computer or on a separate computer.

  • For the most robust configuration, install PI to PI on a different computer than your Data Archive so that you can:

    • Enable source Data Archive failover, which allows PI to PI to connect to an alternate source server if the main source server becomes unavailable.

    • Use n-way buffering to write data to any number of target servers in a Data Archive collective.

    • Install a redundant interface to support interface failover.

  • If you install PI to PI on a Data Archive computer, you can install PI to PI on the target server, such that the target server pulls data from the source server. If the connection between the servers breaks, the target Data Archive can request data from the proper time point upon restoration of the connection.

  • Alternatively, you can install PI to PI on the source server, such that the source server pushes data to the target server. In this case, you must set up a buffering service to control the data flow and send data in case of a lost connection.

  • If you are using PI to PI to copy data to multiple servers in a Data Archive collective, you must use n-way buffering and you must push data from the source server to the collective's servers.
