Requirements for running PI Collective Manager

  • Last UpdatedJan 13, 2023
  • 2 minute read

To use PI Collective Manager, you must have Windows file access and fully qualified domain-name resolution to all servers in the collective. If you cannot meet this requirement, then create the collective manually.

To create or modify a collective, you must set up the following access and permissions.

  • A Windows account with administrative access to all computers in the collective.

  • PI Collective Manager must have access to the HKLM\SOFTWARE\PISystem\PI registry key on each of the Data Archive servers. To establish this access, you must have:

    • Windows operating system remote administration enabled on every Data Archive computer.

    • Remote Registry service running on every Data Archive computer, and the computer where PI Collective Manager is running.

  • On each of the Data Archive servers that will be part of the collective, the Windows account that runs PI Collective Manager must have:

    • Read and write privileges for the HKLM\SOFTWARE\PISystem\PI registry key. If the account is a member of the Local Administrators group, it should already have sufficient privilege.

Note: While it is possible to accomplish this by changing the ACL on the registry settings instead, we do not recommend this method because errors in making these adjustments can prevent AVEVA™ PI System™ applications from properly functioning.

  • On the Data Archive server that will be the primary server, you need the following database security permissions: PIREPLICATION (r,w)

  • If you are using PI Collective Manager to create or modify the collective, you need: PIBACKUP (r,w)

Note: If you are creating or modifying the collective manually, you do not need PIBACKUP access.

To set database security permissions, use the Database Security tool in PI SMT.

Note: These required access permissions are valid for Data Archive version 3.4.380, and later. Version 3.4.375 does not include the PIBACKUP entry in database security so piadmin access is required for PI Collective Manager. Collectives were introduced in version 3.4.375.
