Deployment scenarios and configuration options

A basic deployment of PI Server (Data Archive and the PI AF server) requires one or more Microsoft Windows compatible computers with a 64-bit operating system.

For best performance and improved security, we recommend that you install SQL Server on a different host computer than Data Archive. We also recommend at least two physical drives on the Data Archive host computer.

We also recommend that you install PI AF server and Data Archive on separate host computers for optimal performance and to avoid a scenario where these Server Roles are competing for system resources.

The number of required computers depends on the size and complexity of your PI Server.

Note: We do not recommend installing any PI Server components on a domain controller. If you install the PI AF application service or its SQL Server back end on a domain controller, the installation will fail.
