Labelling scheme for pure components

Pure components are labelled in Assay using a prefixing scheme. The name of each pure component is prefixed with a string of the form 'C0x {P, N, A, O}[+, -] : ', where the following applies:

The x in the character string C0x indicate the number of carbon atoms in the pure component. For example, the 4 in the character string C04 indicates the presence of 4 carbon atoms.

Exactly one of the characters P, N, A or O follows the string C0x. The characters P, N, A and O stand for paraffins, naphthenes, aromatics and olefins respectively.

An optional modifier + or - follows the {P, N, A, O} specifier. The modifier + is read as 'and higher', and the modifier - is read as 'and lower'.

Butene is labelled in Assay as C04O: Butene.

1, 1-dimethylcyclohexane is labelled as C08N : 1, 1-dimethylcyclohexane.
