Installing the VMs Operating System

Install the virtual machine operating system from the restore media for the Hyper-V image for Windows Server 2008, part number K0174JS.

To boot from the DVD ROM:

  1. Insert the virtual image operating system restore DVD.

  2. Using the Server Manager-Hyper-V Manager, connect the virtual machine.

  3. Use the MEDIA-DVD-Capture E: and MEDIA-DVD-Uncapture E:.

Alternatively:

  1. Double-click the virtual machine and select Media > DVD Drive.

  2. Click Insert disk if you want to use an .iso file, or click Capture E to use the physical DVD drive.

  3. Turn on the virtual machine or click the Start button.

    When the virtual operating system boots from the DVD restore media, a blue screen appears with the following text:

    Windows Server 2008 OS Virtual Machine

    Image Restore Media DVD

    DO YOU WANT TO CONTINUE? N = NO - Abort and EXIT

    Y = Yes - Restore Server 2008 VM Image

  4. Press Y to restore the system.

  5. A final warning screen appears with the following text:

    WARNING!

    You are about to delete the contents of your hard drive! Press Y to Continue or N to Abort

    Press Y to begin the restore process. The restore process takes a few minutes.

  6. When prompted for additional media, use the MEDIA-DVD-Un capture E: install the next piece of media then MEDIA-DVD-Capture E: for the virtual machine to recognize the change in media. Alternatively, select the second .iso file.

  7. Once the process is complete, one of the following happens:

    • If the process was successful, a green screen appears.

    • If a problem was encountered, a red screen appears (Resolve the problem and restart OS image recovery procedure, Step 1).

  8. When the green screen appears, remove the DVD media and press Enter to reboot the station.

    The station boots into a Windows virtual operating system environment.
