The data journal is an XML file of raw data generated by applying journal actions to the context element template, with results contained in a hierarchical tree structure. The data journal is an independent file created when a report template is tested against its context.

Data journal tree hierarchy

You can view the data journal in the Journal pane in the RtReports editor. The data journal is available after the report has been tested.

The data journal has a tree structure that corresponds to the hierarchy of the data template.

  • Data journal nodes represent actual data objects defined for the data context in the data template.

  • Data template tree objects can be defined to return one or multiple corresponding data journal nodes.

  • Each data journal node has its own set of attributes, which can be referenced in the report template by using them in the format template definition.

  • The root node of a batch report template data journal is a BatchJournal node.

  • The root node of a time-based report template data journal is a TimeBasedJournal node.

Data journal navigation

The data journal is linked to the data template in the RtReports editor.

You can view the instances of a data template node or journal actions within the data journal by clicking the appropriate element in the data template tree.

The data journal opens to the first corresponding data journal that is associated with the data template element.
