AVEVA™ Point Cloud Manager

Open clash report

  • Last UpdatedMay 08, 2025
  • 10 minute read

The Clash Report function displays the current clash list in the Point Cloud Manager window. This tab is opened automatically when a clash check is performed in MicroStation and AutoCAD.

An example clash is shown below in the Point Cloud Manager 3D view. Clashes between points and CAD primitives are displayed in RED in the 3D View. Clashes may also be viewed in the BubbleView.

Point cloud data displaying clash points in red

The clash list is used to view results of clash checking, enabling individual clashes to be viewed, checked, commented and approved.

Note: The Clash Report feature does not apply to the Marine or SmartPlant 3D clashing - clashes against a Marine or SmartPlant 3D model are viewed in their native environment.

You can view information relating to CAD link clash checking for details of the design drawing check procedure; select the package below to jump to the appropriate clash checking procedure:

MicroStation > AutoCAD > SmartPlant 3D > Marine

After the clashing procedure has been run, the results are saved for future viewing in the clash list by selecting the Clash Report button.

Note: The results do not include Quick Clash and Reduced Volume Clash.

Viewing the clash list

To view the clash list:

  1. On the Utilities tab, select the Clash Report button. This displays the clash dashboard in the Point Cloud Manager window.

Clash dashboard in the Point Cloud Manager window

The clash dashboard opens in the top-down view and gives you a summary of the number of clashes and the status of each clash.

  2. To filter the clash items, select the respective buttons. For details, see table below.

  3. To detach the clash report window from the Point Cloud Manager window, hover over the top-right corner of the window and select the Detach button. Select the button again to re-attach the report to the Point Cloud Manager window.

  4. To view the clash dashboard in full screen, select the Expand button.

The clash browser screen displays clash icons that help you determine the type of the clash and the status of each clash. For details on what each icon and colour represents, see the table below.

  5. If you want to display a clash in the Object Browser, right-click a clash item and then select Show in Object Browser. You can do this because of the link between the clash data and the model files.

As the model files are linked to the clash data by the use of GUIDs, deleting a model file deletes any clash data associated with it.

The following table provides a description of the clash icons and what each colour represents:

Unresolved

Displays the list of objects that have not been resolved or approved.

Checked

Displays the list of clashes that have been checked by the user.

Approved

Displays the list of clashes that have been approved by the user.

Selecting each of these tabs brings up a list of objects pertaining only to those tabs.

Clash workflow

Clashes follow the workflow depicted in the diagram below:

Clash workflow diagram depicting active, checked and approved status

When a clash is made, it goes from Active to Checked, where it is checked by the user who then approves it. Thus, when a clash is approved it no longer appears under the checked count. A clash is no longer active after it has been checked and approved.

Reviewing a clash report

The clash report will indicate the drawings that have been checked against the point cloud, and if those drawings are clash free. The parent group is displayed as a pass or a fail in the listing, and will be highlighted as a green diamond or a red diamond. The group checked could be a drawing or a layer.

The image below displays the Clash Manager after a clash check, the group checked is displaying a fail (red icon). The user has expanded the branch to look for individual objects causing concern.

Objects with a green diamond to their left are not clashing with the point cloud data. Objects with an amber diamond to their left do not register an exact clash with the point cloud, but highlight a near miss situation in a general aligned volume. Objects with a red diamond to their left do clash with the point cloud.

Right-clicking the columns brings up a context menu as shown below:

Repair clash signatures

Enables users to fix the problem with signatures on clashes.

Repair clash signatures

AVEVA Point Cloud Manager includes the concept of a Clash Signature to flag up any potentially malicious activity on the SQL clash database. Any clashes that have been manually modified in the SQL clash database (that is, not by Point Cloud Manager) will be flagged in the Clash Manager.

Projects that contain clashes from older versions (5.3 or earlier) of Point Cloud Manager will not contain clash signatures. This option enables Project Administrators to apply Clash Signatures to older projects so these clashes are not flagged as potential malicious activity.

Applying filters

For clarity, the designer can select to display only the objects in clash by selecting Clashes from the clash dashboard table. All clashes are then shown in isolation, resulting in a more concise list containing only relevant objects.

To simplify the report further:

  1. Select the Filter button on the Clash menu.

    Clash toolbar

  2. In the Filtering dialog, you can choose to display object clashes relevant to their immediate needs.

  3. To filter based on different columns, select the add symbol. You can also have multiple filters on the same column. Filters that have been applied have a filter icon that is displayed alongside the column names.

Filter icon displayed alongside Name column

  4. To filter clashes based on date, select the Date Clashed option from the drop-down and select the is equal to precision shown below.

Date clashed item selected in the Filtering dialog to filter clashes based on date

  5. To clear filters on clashes, select the Clear Filters button on the Clash menu. Alternatively, you can clear filters by selecting the minus symbol on the Filtering dialog.

    Customizing the clash report

The Clash Report may be customized to suit the project needs. The number of displayed columns may be increased or decreased depending on the requirements of the project.

Select columns window displaying default column names with square markers

    To customise the report:

    1. On the Clash menu, click the Select Columns button. The default column names are displayed with square markers.

    2. Select the square markers against the column names that you want to include in the clash report. You also have the option to modify the field names if necessary.

      Checking and approving clashes

The Clash Dashboard has provision for acceptance/approval recording with appropriate comments.

You can access all comment functions by clicking the right mouse button.

To check or approve a clash:

      1. Right-click a clash item and select either Check or Approve.

      2. In the Enter a Comment dialog, add your comments and select OK.

Enter a column dialog to add comments for a clash item

      3. Alternatively, to add a comment, you may even prepare a standard series of check/approve options as simple .txt files.

      4. You must then name these text files clashCheckComments.txt and clashApproveComments.txt and place them into the Dataset directory, wherever the .lfd file is located. This allows a system of standard responses to be used across several project disciplines.

The designer should firstly select Check and the machine name/login will be stored against any comments made. There is provision to add comments for all clashed items independent of a pass or fail condition.

If the comments require change or if there is a change of mind regarding the validity of the checked condition, you can un-check and remove the pass condition.

If the standard comments system has been implemented as discussed above, you can select a predefined project response from the Comment drop-down list. This procedure is identical for the approval of clashes.

Comments may be added directly, or from the standard defined project comments.

You also have the option to include comments through Options under the File menu. Each clash point is associated with a different colour, so when a check or an approve is done, the clash points associated with the clash item change colour as well.

To include comments through the Options menu:

        1. Go to File > Options > Projects.

        2. Then, browse to select text files against the Checked Comments File and Approved Comments File fields shown below.

Checked comments and approved comments fields highlighted in the project options under File menu

          Viewing clash screenshots

          To view clash screenshots:

          1. On the clash dashboard, right-click a clash item and select View Clash Screenshots. This opens a new window displaying the selected clash in both the 2D and 3D views.

Clash points are displayed yellow in the 2D view. If clash objects are not displayed within Point Cloud Manager, only the bounding box for the clash element is displayed as shown below. The clash number is displayed at the top of the window.

Clash points displayed in yellow in the 2D view

If clash objects are displayed in the main 3D view, then these will be shown in the screenshot window.

            Viewing clashes in isolation

You can double-click on a listed element to highlight, which will turn the clash points yellow, and jump to it in 3D.

If there are several clashes being displayed, to review clashes in isolation:

            • On the clash dashboard, right-click the clash item and select Show only.

Only the current highlighted (yellow) clash will be visible on screen.
