The Classification tab enables you to automatically classify your point data. For this, it makes use of the Intelligent Point Cloud service which analyzes the point cloud data and returns classes of points that may include:
-
Planar
-
Structural
-
Piping
-
Small, medium or large equipment
The classified points are then grouped into instances to form a single object or entity. The service also automatically tags each object or entity, which enables the engineer/designer to view only the data that they need to work with.
Automatic dataset classification
This section gives you an overview of how you can automatically classify your dataset using the point cloud classification system.
Steps to classify datasets
-
Generate and host data
Ensure your data is hosted on CONNECT. This can be done by publishing from the Point Cloud Manager Desktop application or generating it from the CONNECT platform.
-
Navigate to the Classification tab
When your data is ready, go to the Classification tab and select the dataset that you wish to classify.
-
Run Auto-Classification
Under the Classification tab, select Run Auto-Classification. This opens the options for classifying points.
-
Select dataset and model
-
From the first drop-down menu, select the dataset.

-
From the second drop-down menu, select either Model WP4 or Model WP5.
Refer to the tooltip to determine which model is best suited for your needs.
-
-
Review classifications
When the classification process is complete, you can review the results in the Admin panel. This displays the number of instances identified in each category.

-
Visual inspection
-
To visually inspect the point cloud classification, open the project in the Point Cloud Manager Desktop application.
-
Select the Points drop-down arrow to view the points in color classification mode.

-
-
Interact with classifications
From the desktop application, select the Classifications tab to interact with the data. You can toggle the visibility of different classifications. The selected classifications remain visible in both standard point and solid point modes, enabling greater data interrogation.
-
Select categories
Users can select specific categories, such as large equipment, to focus on. Any point data that is classified as large equipment is visible on the screen as you interact with it.

-
Highlight data instances
Click on instances of data to highlight specific sections for further analysis.

By following these steps, you can efficiently classify and interact with your datasets using the Point Cloud Classification system.
