Publish Solid Point Cloud

Solid Point Cloud (SPC) data can be produced as a part of the Point Cloud Manager dataset generation (.lfd) or as a separate operation for existing Point Cloud Manager datasets.

Producing the Solid Point Cloud resources as part of AVEVA Point Cloud Manager dataset generation (Gateway mode)

To produce Solid Point Cloud data as part of the Point Cloud Manager dataset generation:

1. In the Registration panel, when you right-click a registration group and select Generate Dataset, the Generation Settings window is displayed where you can enable the production of Solid Point Cloud data by selecting Generate Solid Point Cloud.

2. You can then select the size of the solid points you wish to produce. Each option describes the type of data that is typically appropriate for that setting.

When preparing laser data for use with the SPC format, it is important to select a size that is consistent with the capture device.

If the capture density is 0.1m, a 1-cm display spacing is clearly inappropriate and will not offer increased clarity.

Laser survey data can cover a wide area at extremely high densities, and hence requires the project to be viewed on hardware with powerful graphical resources. When the SPC is activated, all the necessary pre-prepared resources are loaded into the GPU memory. An example is illustrated below regarding data size, but it is important to consider why this is being produced and who may access the data immediately or later.

For example, if the data is being prepared to perform a client review session on a high specification machine, the finest setting may be considered appropriate when viewing high resolution terrestrial laser scans. This gives the best quality visualisation.

Should this be shared by all members of the organization, however, there is an argument to consider a more ‘course’ setting to allow the team to experience a smooth viewing/flight experience.

Producing the Solid Point Cloud resources for an existing AVEVA Point Cloud Manager dataset (Server mode)

To produce Solid Point Cloud data for an existing Point Cloud Manager dataset:

• Right-click on the dataset within the Project tab and select Publish > Solid Point Cloud. The dialog appears, enabling you to select the size of the solid points you wish to produce. Each option describes the type of data that is typically appropriate for that setting.
