AVEVA™ Point Cloud Manager

Add planar deviation

  • Last UpdatedMar 13, 2025
  • 3 minute read

AVEVA Point Cloud Manager has the ability to colour laser scan data by distance/depth to aid deformation visualization and analysis. The user may select one of the following planes within the laser scan data:

  • Horizontal (1 pick)

  • Vertical (2 pick)

  • Free (3 pick)

To measure a plane:

  1. Select the corresponding icon for the plane you wish to measure and then pick the relevant number of points within the 3D view. On the final pick, a blue grid is displayed which tracks the mouse cursor. This gives a preview of the plane that will be selected should you pick that point.

Deviation measurements can be taken in the 3D points, HyperBubble, BubbleView and Solid Point Cloud. For BubbleViews, visualization of variance is possible only with datasets that contain the new BubbleView resources (jpegs/multi-layered bubbles). The deviation measurements option is disabled for .int-based BubbleViews.

  2. To measure the deviation of a wall, select the Vertical icon and click on two points on the wall to be measured. An initial deviation measurement is displayed.

  3. At this point, you may roll the mouse wheel to increase or decrease the depth of the plane. You can also hold down the Ctrl key and roll the mouse wheel to change the position of the plane. At this point, you can also click on any point in the laser data to get a Spot Height measurement – the distance from the selected point to the plane of the deviation measurement. These spot height measurements are displayed in the 3D view alongside the laser data.

  4. When you select the Deviation icon, on the Actions tab shown below, adjust the Plane height and Deviation width by using the arrows.

  5. When you are happy with the measurement, select Accept to save the measurement. Select Cancel to cancel the measurement. Alternatively, right-click or press Esc to cancel the measurement.

  6. When you are happy with the deviation measurement, simply click to complete the measurement. The deviation measurement will then be added to the Measurements Workspace within the Measurements Manager.

  7. If the measurement needs to be edited after completion, right-click on the measurement in the Measurements Manager and select Modify. Again, you may roll the mouse wheel to increase or decrease the depth of the plane. You can also hold down the Ctrl key and roll the mouse wheel to change the position of the plane. At this point, you can also click on any point in the laser data to get a Spot Height measurement – the distance from the selected point to the plane of the deviation measurement.

  8. When you are happy with the deviation measurement, simply click to complete the measurement. The changes will be updated in the Measurements Manager.
