AVEVA™ PI Server Installation and Configuration (PI Server 2018)

The PI MDB to PI AF transition

  • Last UpdatedFeb 12, 2025
  • 1 minute read

On PI Server 2010 and later versions, PI AF replaces the PI Module Database (PI MDB).

Note: Client applications that are developed after PI Server 2010 may support only PI AF.

To provide backward compatibility, PI Server 2010 and later versions copy the contents of PI MDB over to AF, in a process called migration. After the migration, the Data Archive server constantly synchronizes the MDB content with AF, allowing you to access MDB content from PI AF clients as well as MDB clients. Similarly, you can access PI AF content from MDB clients, as well as AF clients. This allows you to access your PI AF content with MDB-based tools.
