Upgrade PI AF server via the install kit

Before you begin this procedure, make sure to complete these steps:

  • Review the SQL Server considerations for PI AF SQL Server database upgrade in Pre-installation requirements for PI AF.

  • Download the PI Server install kit, as described in Download the PI Server install kit.

  • Ensure the account used to run the install kit has permissions to read, manage, and create groups on the machine where PI AF SQL Server resides.

  • Ensure that you have db_owner privileges to upgrade the PI AF SQL Server database on the SQL server if an SQL administrator is not available.

Follow these steps to upgrade the PI AF Application Service and the AF SQL scripts on the host computer. Additionally, as part of the upgrade process, the AF SQL scripts will be executed to upgrade the PI AF SQL Server database, whether it is local or remote.

  1. Launch the PI Server install kit to start the upgrade for your PI AF server.

    1. Double-click the PI Server install kit.

    2. Click Next.

The Feature Selection window opens, highlighting the PI Server components initially selected for upgrade, based upon what PI software is detected on your host computer.

The PI Server install kit provides a simple and easy-to-use interface that provides selectable Server Roles you can choose from for your upgrade. These Server Roles automatically select the PI components necessary to upgrade a typical deployment of the PI Server server role you select. Alternatively, you can click the Individual Features tab to add any PI Server features to customize your upgrade process.

  2. Click Next.

The SQL Server Connection window appears.

  3. Verify the SQL Server name (and optionally the named instance) for your upgrade. The default is the SQL Server name and instance configured for your existing PI AF server.

    • Select the default SQL Server, or select another name from the drop-down list.

    • To select a named instance, select the instance name from the list, or enter it in the following format:

      • Server Name\Named Instance

      • .\Named Instance

    • To specify an SQL Express named instance, enter it in the following format:

      • Server Name\SQLEXPRESS

      • .\SQLEXPRESS

In this scenario, the SQL server resides on the same computer as the installed AF SQL scripts. When you specify the default instance, you can refer to it by the server name without a named instance. When specifying a non-default instance, specify the server name and named instance.

  4. Ensure that AF SQL script execution is selected, ensuring that the upgrade will execute the scripts to create the PI AF SQL Server database on this computer.

  5. Click Next to proceed with the setup.

A check is performed to see if an AF SQL Server database already exists.

  6. If the installation detects an existing PI AF SQL Server database, the SQL Server Rules window will appear. The installation will automatically backup the existing PI AF SQL Server database, then execute the AF SQL scripts to create the new PI AF SQL Server database.

We recommend that you have a valid backup file for any upgrade if there is already an AF SQL Server database detected by the install kit. If you clear this checkbox, you are acknowledging that you have a valid backup file in case of any issues during the setup. When you upgrade, the setup program will update the existing PI AF SQL Server database. After these changes are complete, a downgrade of the PI AF SQL Server database will not be possible.

  7. Click Next to continue with the installation.

The AF Server window appears if one or more features that you selected require a connection to the PI AF server during the upgrade.

  8. Click Next to proceed with the setup.

    The Service Accounts window appears.

  9. Verify the service accounts to use for your PI AF Application Service, or specify a different account. The default account is the account already configured for these services in your existing PI AF server.

  10. Click Next to proceed with the setup.

The Summary window appears, listing the selected features and version numbers scheduled for the upgrade.

  11. Click Install to start the upgrade process.

The Installation Progress window opens. The Complete window opens when the upgrade is complete.

Note: If you cancel the upgrade before it is complete, the PI AF SQL Server database might have already been created and you will need to remove the database manually.

  12. Click Close.
