AVEVA™ PI Server Installation and Configuration (PI Server 2018)

Your upgrade options

You can choose how soon and to what extent you want to take advantage of these new security features. Eventually, your goal should be to move the Data Archive server to the new model, but you are not required to do that. Here are your options:

  • Option 1: Migrate over time

If you choose this option, you immediately switch to Windows authentication, but you continue to use some components of your existing configuration. You can replace these components over time. See Migrate over time for instructions. This is the recommended path for most installations.

  • Option 2: Quick-start migration

If your existing configuration is very simple (you use only a handful of PI users and PI groups) then you can start with a quick upgrade configuration. You can keep this configuration indefinitely, or you can use it as a starting point for a slow migration to the new model. See Quick-start security migration for instructions.

  • Option 3: Implement from scratch

You can implement an entirely new security configuration to take advantage of the new security model. The disadvantage is that this could be disruptive to existing users. See Set up a new security configuration for instructions.

  • Option 4: Keep existing configuration

You have the option to continue to use your existing security configuration for as long as you choose. See Keep existing configuration for tips and concerns.
