AVEVA™ PI Server Installation and Configuration (PI Server 2018)

Install options for PI Notifications Service

  • Last UpdatedAug 21, 2025
  • 1 minute read

Each instance of PI Notifications Service runs notification rules for a single PI AF server; each PI AF server can have exactly one instance of PI Notifications Service that runs the notification rules for the server. You can install the service on the same computer as the corresponding PI AF server or on a different computer. For best performance, install PI Notifications Service on a different computer that offers dedicated computing resources for PI Notifications Service. See PI AF server installation for information on how to use the PI Server install kit to deploy PI AF components across multiple computers.

You can install PI Notification Service on a computer as a stand-alone program. Before running the installation program for a stand-alone PI Notifications Service, PI AF server must be installed on another computer to which the installer for PI Notifications Service can connect. For details on firewall configuration, see List of port requirements for PI Notifications Service. After installing the PI Notifications Service, you can use PI System Explorer running on any computer to perform all additional user configuration of PI Notifications Service, such as creating rules, configuring endpoints, and so forth.

You can only install one instance of PI Notifications Service on a computer.

To provide high availability for PI Notifications Service, install PI Notifications Service in a failover cluster created with Windows Clustering. A failover cluster maintains a consistent image on more than one node and allows nodes to transfer resource ownership on demand. See Install in a failover cluster.

Note: You can include PI Notifications Service in the same cluster.
