This topic provides recommended requirements for the machine hosting the latest release of PI AF server 2018 SP3 Patch 6, and contains the following information:

  • Supported operating systems, third-party software, and PI System requirements

Supported operating systems and software

For production systems, AF Server 2018 SP3 Patch 6 can be deployed on the following Microsoft Windows Server operating systems:

  • Windows Server 2025, including Windows Server Core installations, or

  • Windows Server 2022: All editions in both full and core installations

  • Windows Server 2019: All editions in both full and core installations

  • Windows Server 2016: All editions in both full and core installations

  • Windows Server 2012 Core & Windows Server 2012 R2 Core*

  • For test systems, AF Server 2018 can be deployed on Windows 11 in addition to the Windows Server versions listed above.

PI System requirements

The following minimum version of Data Archive is required for PI AF Client:

  • Data Archive version 3.4.395 or later

Third-Party Software

  • Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8

  • Microsoft Excel

    Microsoft Excel 2010 SP2, Microsoft Excel 2013 (32 bit or 64 bit), Microsoft Excel 2016 (32 bit or 64 bit), or Microsoft Excel 2019 (32 bit or 64 bit) is required for PI Builder to be installed and/or upgraded.

  • Visual Studio

    Visual Studio 2012 or later is required to develop applications with the PI AF SDK that utilize the Rich Data Access features. These applications must target .NET 4.6.2 (or later). Applications built against the 2.5.x (2012) version of the AF SDK targeting .NET 4 will continue to work with this version.

*Microsoft no longer supports these versions of Windows Server. Neither version is recommended.

General SQL Server requirements

Supported SQL Server versions

  • SQL Server 2022

  • SQL Server 2019 (Windows version only, some features will not work with Cumulative Update 2. KB Article) There is no support for the Itanium CPU.

  • SQL Server 2017 (Windows version only)

  • SQL Server 2016 Enterprise (Windows Update or Microsoft KB 3164398 required)

  • SQL Server 2014 SP3

  • PI AF server works with 32-bit or 64-bit SQL Server versions.

Required SQL Server components

  • Database engine, Agent (backup, replication, and audit trail)

SQL Server components not used by the PI AF Server

  • SQL Server components such as Reporting Services, Analysis Services, Integration Services, Notification Services are not used by PI AF server.

SQL Server Requirements for PI AF High Availability

To take advantage of the PI AF High Availability (HA Collective) feature, the primary collective member must run SQL Server Standard Edition, SQL Server Business Intelligence, SQL Server Enterprise Edition, or SQL Server Datacenter Edition. SQL Server does not need to reside on the same box as PI AF Server.

SQL Server Requirements for PI AF Audit Trail Functionality

The PI AF Audit Trail feature is also supported in:

  • SQL Server 2014 SP3 Enterprise

  • SQL Server 2016 Enterprise (Windows Update or Microsoft KB 3164398 required)

  • SQL Server 2016 SP1 Enterprise or Standard Editions

  • SQL Server 2017 Enterprise or Standard Editions (Windows Version Only)

  • SQL Server 2019 Enterprise or Standard Editions (Windows Version Only, Audit Trail does not work with Cumulative Update 2.)

  • SQL Server 2022 Enterprise or Standard Editions (Windows Version Only)
