Use this procedure to create an element with an event frame generation analysis and a notification rule that specifies your own email address as a recipient. For testing purposes, the procedure includes steps that trigger an event frame, which generates an email notification.

Follow these steps to test email notification by configuring analysis and notification rules:

  1. In PI System Explorer, create a new event frame template.

    1. In the navigator, click Library.

    2. If necessary, expand Templates and select Event Frame Templates.

    3. Click New Template.

    4. For Name, assign the template a name, such as TemplateTest1.

    5. Click Check In to save the new event frame template.

Later in this procedure, you will need to refer to this event frame template.

  2. Create a new element.

    1. In the navigator, click Elements.

    2. Click New Element.

The Choose Element Template dialog opens.

    3. Click OK.

      The Element Properties window opens.

    4. Select the Attributes tab.

    5. Click New Attribute.

    6. For Value Type, select a static type such as Double.

    7. For Value, enter a static value, such as 50.

    8. For Properties, drop down the list of options and select the current value (by default, Configuration Item) so the value is set to <None>.

    9. Click Check In to save the new element and its attribute.

By default the new element is named Element1 and the attribute you created is named Attribute1.

  3. Configure an event frame generation analysis.

    1. In the Element Properties window, click the Analyses tab.

    2. Click Create a new analysis or click the New Analysis icon ().

    3. Select Event Frame Generation as the analysis type.

    4. From the Event Frame Template list, select the event frame template named TemplateTest1 that you created in step 1.

    5. In the StartTrigger1 row, create a trigger expression for the attribute you have already created. Start typing the expression in the Expression column. For example, enter 'Attribute1' > 50.

The start trigger must be a Boolean expression that specifies a condition that starts an event frame.

    6. Click Evaluate.

At this time the Value at Evaluation column should say False.

    7. Click Check In to save the new event frame generation analysis.

  4. Create an attribute specifying your own email address.

    1. On the Attributes tab, click New Attribute.

By default this attribute is named Attribute2.

    1. For Value Type, select String.

    2. For Value, enter your own email address.

    3. Click Check In.

If you have access to Active Directory, other options are available for testing email notification. This step lets you confirm email delivery even if you do not have access to Active Directory.

  5. Click the Analyses tab and then click Create a new notification rule for the selected analysis.

  6. Optionally, test whether you can successfully receive a notification email.

    1. Click Manage Formats.

    2. Click Test Send.

    3. For Email address enter your own email address.

    4. Click Test Send.

    5. Click OK.

You should receive a test notification email.

  7. Define a new notification rule for the analysis you created earlier.

    1. Click View/Edit Subscriptions.

    2. Expand Dynamic Endpoints.

    3. Click Create a new dynamic endpoint.

    4. For Email Attribute, select Attribute2, the attribute you created in the previous step that included your own email.

    5. Click Create.

    6. Drag and drop the email attribute you just created to the notification rule at left.

    7. Click OK.

    8. Click Check In.

  8. Edit the value of the attribute to trigger a notification.

    1. On the Attributes tab, select the first attribute you created, named Attribute1.

    2. For Value, enter a value large enough to trigger a notification. For example, enter 100.

    3. Click Check In.

You should receive a notification email.

  9. Remember to change the value of Attribute1 back to something less than 50 to ensure the event frame is closed.
