AVEVA™ PI Server Installation and Configuration (PI Server 2018)

The piadmins group

The piadmins group is a built-in PI group intended to represent Data Archive administrators. We recommend that you use piadmins, rather than the super-user account (piadmin) for common administrative tasks.

On new installations of Data Archive 3.4.380 and later, the built-in PI group called piadmins is granted full administrative access permissions by default, so you need not configure access permissions for it.

Earlier versions of the Data Archive server did not grant piadmins administrative access by default and upgrade installations do not change the access permissions for piadmins. On upgraded Data Archive servers the piadmins group has whatever access you granted it. You might need to reconfigure the piadmins access permissions in order to use this PI group for administrative tasks. To do this, add read/write access for piadmins to:

  • All database security entries (in PI SMT)

  • All existing points and modules.

See Learn how to configure access permissions for more information. You can then map piadmins to the Windows users and/or groups that represent your Data Archive system administrators.

Note: The piadmins PI group was called piadmin on previous versions of the Data Archive server. This meant that Data Archive servers had both a PI user called piadmin and a PI group called piadmin. The PI group name was changed to piadmins (plural) with the PI Server 3.4.380 release, in order to prevent conflict with the piadmin user account.
