AVEVA™ PI Server Installation and Configuration (PI Server 2018)

Phase 2: Qualify

  • Last UpdatedNov 13, 2025
  • 2 minute read

The PI Server install kit supports direct upgrades to PI Server 2018 SP3 only if your current server satisfies both of the following prerequisites:

  • Running version Data Archive 2015 R2 or later

  • Running a 64-bit version of Data Archive

Note:Upgrade paths may also depend on your Windows OS version. Newer PI Server versions (2018 and 2024) do not support older operating systems (for example, Windows Server 2008 R2). If your Windows OS is not supported, you may need to move to a newer OS before upgrading PI Server. See System Requirements for details.

However, you may have a version that is earlier than PI Data Archive 2015 R2 or a 32-bit version of the software, and you still wish to upgrade to PI Server 2018 SP3. This second phase involves intermediary steps that qualifies your unsupported version of Data Archive for a direct upgrade to PI Server 2018 SP3.

If your server(s) is not supported, you will need to qualify it in either or both of the following intermediary steps:

  • Upgrade to Data Archive 2015 R2 or later

  • Upgrade to a 64-bit version if you are currently running a 32-bit version of Data Archive.

  1. Determine which prerequisite is not met to qualify your server for a direct upgrade using the PI Server install kit:

    • The current version is earlier than Data Archive 2015 R2

    • The current version of Data Archive is 32-bit

  2. If your server is running a version of software that is earlier than Data Archive 2015 R2:

    1. Select and download Data Archive 2015 R2 or later from the Customer Portal.

    2. Upgrade your server to the intermediary version using the install kit you downloaded.

    3. Download the PI Server install kit.

    4. Upgrade your server to the most recent version (PI Server 2018 SP3) using the downloaded PI Server install kit.

  3. If your current version of Data Archive is 32-bit:

    1. Download and install the 64-bit version of the current version onto the 64-bit host computer for your upgraded server. Use the exact same version of the PI Data Archive that was installed on the previous PI Data Archive host computer.

    2. Move your Data Archive onto the 64-bit host computer for your upgraded server. See Move your Data Archive to a new computer.

    3. Upgrade to the most recent version using the PI Server install kit on the host computer for your upgraded server.

For further details on moving a 32-bit Data Archive server to a 64-bit host machine, see the Knowledge Base article: KB00530 - Upgrading to 64-bit PI Data Archive while moving to 64-bit hardware.

PI Server 2010 is no longer supported, but upgrade guidance is provided for legacy customers still running it.
