A small PI Server deployment can involve installing the PI Data Archive and the PI AF server (PI Application Service and PI AF SQL database) on a single computer.

We recommend that SQL Server Standard and SQL Server Enterprise be used for most installations, but you can consider using SQL Server Express for systems with few assets (10,000 assets or less) and low-to-moderate workloads (25,000 PI points or fewer). However, because SQL Server Express imposes limitations on CPU, memory, and disk usage, you must also factor in object sizes, concurrent load, and usage patterns of PI AF clients.

Note: If you use SQL Server Standard or SQL Server Enterprise, you should install it on a different computer from Data Archive to ensure that the performance of Data Archive is not degraded.
