Software prerequisites and installation considerations
The following software prerequisites and installation considerations are recommended for Data Archive 2018:
-
Before installation of any PI Data Archive releases, it is strongly recommended to complete a full backup of your current PI Data Archive environment.
-
If you are installing the PIAFlink subsystem, PI AF Server 2015 R2 or higher is required.
-
Upgrades from PI Data Archive 2015 R2 SP1 or newer are supported. If upgrading from a version older than 2015 R2 SP1, a two-step upgrade is required.
-
PI Buffer Subsystem 3.4.375.84 or later is required with this version of PI Data Archive. It is highly recommended to upgrade to the PI Buffer Subsystem, version 4.8 or later.
-
Install .NET 4.8 before installing PI Server. The Microsoft .NET Framework offline installer is no longer included in the PI Server install kit. For systems with no internet access, download the .NET 4.8 offline installer from Microsoft and then copy it to the PI Server machine before running the PI Server installation.
Supported operating systems and software
The following table lists the required operating systems and software for Data Archive 2018.

|
|
For test systems, Data Archive 2018 can be deployed on Windows 11 in addition to the Windows Server versions listed above for production systems. |
|
|
Third-party software |
Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8 |
1There is a known issue when trying to use the integrated install kit interactively on Windows Server 2022 Core. Performing a silent install is recommended.
2Microsoft no longer supports these versions of Windows Server. Neither version is recommended.
License requirement
Prior to installing or upgrading to this version of Data Archive, make sure you obtain a valid license activation file. See Understand license provisioning for Data Archive.
.NET Framework
In an effort to enhance security and minimize potential vulnerabilities in .NET Framework, the .NET Framework offline installer has been excluded from the PI Server install kit. We encourage you to download the latest version of the .NET Framework directly from Microsoft to ensure you have the most up-to-date patches.
Installation or Upgrade of Data Archive Collectives
Starting with Data Archive 2017, collectives require secure communication using certificates. If you want to upgrade a Data Archive server that is part of a collective and older than Data Archive 2017, all members of the collective must also be upgraded to Data Archive 2018.
PI AF Server Requirements
PI AF Server requires Microsoft SQL Server and the minimum supported version and edition depend on the each specific PI AF Server version. Please refer to the PI AF Server documentation or release notes for details on all supported SQL Server versions and editions.
If you plan on installing SQL Server on the same node as Data Archive, the SQL Express Edition should be installed so that the SQL Server does not compete with system resources with Data Archive.
