Microsoft SQL Server Always On Availability Groups and Always On Basic Availability Groups provide a way to improve database high availability. Always On Availability Groups allow multiple databases in a single SQL Server instance to fail over together. Always On Basic Availability Groups support a single database failover in a single SQL Server instance.

PI AF is compatible with Microsoft SQL Server Always On Availability Groups as well as SQL Server Always On Basic Availability Groups. It is important that you develop a plan for the solution you will implement before you begin to install PI AF. The topics in this section explain how to install and configure PI AF within an availability group that already exists or within an availability group that you plan to set up. The steps are the same whether you use PI AF with Always On Availability Groups or Always On Basic Availability Groups.

Note: The topics in this section are written for users who are familiar with the structure and function of Microsoft SQL Server Always On Availability Groups. See Always On Availability Groups: a high-availability and disaster recovery solution for detailed information about the features and benefits associated with Always On Availability Groups as well as possible implementation methods. For similar information about Always On Basic Availability Groups, see Basic Always On availability groups for a single database.
