Note: The following features are not supported if you use Azure SQL Database to host the PI AF database: Audit Trail, AF Collectives, backups during upgrade, RTQP, and SQL Server maintenance jobs.

You have the option to install or upgrade a PI Server server through the command-line prompt, as opposed to using the install wizard user interface.

Performing a PI Server installation through the command line consists of downloading the PI Server install kit, and then running the installation command with the specific arguments corresponding to your desired deployment.

Through the command line, you can install or upgrade all of the PI Server roles and features: Data Archive, PI AF server, PI Notifications Service, and PI Analysis Service.

In addition, you can specify a silent installation where there will be no user interaction nor any display shown during the entire process.

Installation through the command-line prompt may be useful for situations where the environment is closely-controlled and regulated. In addition, using the command line is beneficial when the details of the installation or upgrade are strictly determined and approved in advance, as in an embedded installation.

Silent installations can also be incorporated in to scripts for automated installation across numerous deployments.

Note: Installation or upgrade through a command-line must be done with an account that has Administrators-level privileges.
