A mnemonic symbol is a static graphic that represents a valve that is not under the control of an HMI application. A mnemonic type of SA_Valve_And_Damper symbol includes Wizard options to set the horizontal or vertical orientation of the mnemonic symbol and its actuator type.

The other types of the symbol consist of three major symbol components, as shown in the following example. The direction of travel indicators are optional and not required to make the symbol operational.

Valve body

The valve body is the portion of the valve that regulates the flow of a gas or liquid through the valve. The SA_Valve_And_Damper symbol provides two types of valve bodies: Discrete or Analog. A discrete valve has two valve positions, open or closed. Analog valves have the open and closed positions and all intermediate positions between open and closed.

The shape of the body identifies whether the valve is analog or discrete. A discrete valve body is shorter than the analog symbol. The valve body issues commands to open or close the valve.

Actuator

A valve actuator provides the energy to move the valve open or closed. An actuator provides the information about the valve's position. The symbol includes a Wizard option to use Open and Closed limit switches that indicates the valve's current position.

The symbol provides three types of actuators (MOV, Control, and Damper) whose background color indicates the state of the valve.

Direction of travel indicator

Direction of travel indicators are placed between the valve's body and actuator and point to the left or right to indicate the valve is traveling to the open or closed positions.

Color representation of valve state

The symbol's body and actuator use background fill color to show the state of a valve.
