AVEVA™ Unified Supply Chain

Copy cases

You can copy a case and its children to a different point in the case hierarchy of the same model, or to a different model. Within the copy, the hierarchy of cases is preserved and their overrides kept, but the newly copied branch of the tree inherits the settings of the new parent.

Warning: Copying cases across models is not recommended. Depending on the source and destination models, it may lead to data loss and could even cause AVEVA Unified Supply Chain to stop working.

Along with workspace cases it is also possible to copy analytics.

In depth: Copying takes the differences between each case and its parent, and recreates them in the new case hierarchy. For example, if a case defines an override for a process unit capacity, it also overrides this quantity when copied to a new level of the case tree.
Where a difference refers to an item which does not exist in the new case hierarchy, the item is created. For example, if a case contains a calculation which is constrained, and is copied to a location which does not contain this calculation and constraint, in the new hierarchy the calculation and constraint are created.
As such, case copying acts in similar ways to updating cases. In a sense, copying a case would be the same as creating a new case at the destination point, and then using Update Case to merge the differences between the source case and the new destination case.

Follow the steps below to copy a case.

  1. Choose the case to copy

The case hierarchy in the Model Explorer with one case selected

Select the source model in the Supply Chain Models tab, then choose the case to copy from the case list.

  2. Copy the case branch

Part of the Model Explorer with the Corsicana model and one of its subcases selected, and the mouse pointer on the Copy ribbon button

Click Copy in the Clipboard group of the Home ribbon tab.

  3. Check out destination

Part of the Model Explorer with a model called Destination Model and its Master Case selected, and the mouse pointer on the Check Out ribbon button

    • If you are copying the case within the same model: skip this step.

    • If you are copying the case to a different model: ensure that the destination model is open for editing. Check out the model if necessary.

  4. Select new parent

Part of the Model Explorer with Destination Model and its Planning History subcase selected

Select the case which will act as the new parent in the case list.

  5. Paste case

Part of the Mode Explorer with Destination Model and its Planning History subcase selected, and the mouse pointer on the Paste ribbon button

Click Paste in the Clipboard group of the Home ribbon tab.

  6. Delete unnecessary branches

FCC Shutdown subcase selected in the case hierarchy and the mouse pointer on the Delete ribbon button

If necessary, delete any children of the copied case which are not required.

  7. Update case

The Model Explorer with the Master Case of the Destination Model selected, and the mouse pointer on the Update Case ribbon button

Select Update Case for the new case branch.

  8. Compare source

The Update Case dialog comparing the Master Cases of Corsicana Refinery and Destination Model

Compare the new case to the original case.

Warning: The newly pasted case copies only the differences to the parent in the original case. When pasting the new case, these differences apply in the units of the new case. If a unit of measure has changed in the destination model, the newly pasted value is incorrect. Use Update Case after pasting to compare the differences between the newly pasted case and the original source.

  9. Reconfigure hierarchy

The Summary tab of the Inventories page in the Plan environment, with the mouse pointer on one subcase from the Preceding Case list

Reconfigure those items in the newly copied case which depend on other elements in the case hierarchy. In particular, configure the Preceding Case for any inventory.
