Balancing crude

  • Last UpdatedAug 11, 2025
  • 2 minute read

In the balancing crude workflow, one crude in the base blend is fully or partially replaced by each of the candidate crudes. This measures the effect of reducing the purchase of a single base blend crude and replacing in with specific crudes. This is in contrast to the base loading workflow, where any one or more of the base crudes can be replaced.

  1. Lock Base Blend

Either fix or lock the crudes in the base blend, so they must be purchased in the exact amounts in the optimized solution. You can lock the purchase amounts by choosing Lock Solution from the Behaviour group of the Home ribbon tab.

  2. Free Balancing Crude

Unlock the crude which should be swapped out for the candidate crudes. This allows the optimizer to vary the purchase amount of this crude. To do this, select the crude you want to unlock, and click Unlock Solution in the Behaviour group of the Home ribbon tab.

  3. Select Candidates

Select your candidate crudes. To force the crude into the base blend and replace the balancing crude, enter a Fixed purchase amount. Otherwise, the crude may not be brought in if it is not economically beneficial.

  4. Analyze Results

Run the optimization and review the Economics Detail, and other pages, to understand the effect of adding each crude to the base blend.
