A case defines the settings applied to a particular period in terms of constraints, stream routing, blending, and so on. If a different combination of settings is required (for example, different relative unit capacities) you need to use a different case for each period.
Click the Edit button to edit the settings for a particular case. The case is selected when the model is set up and the case is added (Add Plants). During initial model setup, adding a case embeds a copy of the case within the new model. Clicking the Edit button opens the modeling environment where you can change the plant and case level settings.
When modifying a plant case, the new setting apply to all periods which use that case as a definition. Therefore you only need to update the settings in one period, or associate a different case with the relevant period and then update this single case.
Warning: When a planning case is added to a Network model, a copy of the original case is embedded within the Network model. Changes to the original
case are not incorporated into the copy embedded in the Network model. Similarly,
changes in the embedded case leave the original source case unchanged.
For example, the Corsicana refinery has a CDU capacity of 100 kbbl/d. When a case
from this model is brought into the Network model, a copy of the case is made. If
the original model capacity is edited to 90 kbbl/d, the definition within the Network
model is still 100 kbbl/d. If the Network model then has its capacity changed via
a watch set to 110 kbbl/d, the original case is still 90 kbbl/d.
Instead of editing a case within a multi-period model, it may be better to replace the case with another version that has been worked on separately.
You can edit plant settings via the Watch window. Add the relevant watch item to a watch set and edit them directly in the main modeling environment rather than by editing plants.
Merge changes between source and embedded plants
You may want to make changes to the original source model for a multi-period or multi-plant model. This allows the original source plants to be kept up-to-date and in-line with network style models. Where changes are made to the original source plant, these changes can be merged into the embedded plant representations.
-
Make changes to source plant

Edit the original source case and make relevant changes to the per-period representations.
-
Select combined model

Select the combined case and run Update Case.
-
Merge changes

Configure the Update Case dialog so that the source is the original base workspace, and choose the relevant case where changes have been made. For the target, choose the relevant embedded plant.
