Access rights may be controlled by project design area. As with objects, user groups (including user-created groups) are granted permissions to such areas. Since drawings are assigned to design areas, this in turn controls which drawings each user can view and/or edit.
Unlike object permissions, area permissions are defined by the user for the project.
Before area based access rights can be setup, the feature must be enabled. Refer to Enable Area Based Security for details.
Once area based security has been enabled, the list of project design areas will be listed under the Areas node in the left-hand pane.
To view the security settings for an area, for example, which groups have which level of access to it, double-click Areas in the left-hand pane. The list of objects is then displayed:

Select an area from this list. The settings for the area are then displayed in the right-hand pane. For example:

If a group is in the No Permission Group column, this indicates that the users in that group have no access to drawings in the area. If a group is in the Permission Group column, this indicates that the users in that group has the access rights to the area as specified in the adjacent Access Type column.
To give a group permissions to an area, double-click on the group name in the No Permission Group list. The selected group is then moved to the Permission Group list. Select the level of access the group has to the area from the Access Type list.
There are three access types:
-
Full Access: If a group has Full Access to an area, users in that group can carry out all read and write operations on drawings in that area, for example, they can view, create, edit them etc.
-
Read Only: If a group has Read Only access to an area, users in that group can open and view drawings in that area, but cannot create or edit them.
-
No Access: If a group has No Access to an area, users in that group have no access to drawings in the area.
Note: By default, the System Admin group will have Full Access to all areas. See the table for further details of the rights to drawings granted by group membership.
To remove permissions to an area for a group, double-click on the group name in the Permission Group list.
In the above example, for area 20 South:
-
The Drawing Manager and Drawing User groups are in the No Permission Group column, meaning that users in those groups have no access to drawings in area 20 South.
-
The System Admin group is in the Permission Group column and has been assigned the Full Access access type, meaning that users in that group have complete access to drawings in that group.
-
The Designer group is in the Permission Group column and has been assigned the Read Only access type, meaning that users in that group have viewing rights to drawings in that group, but cannot create or edit them.
Note: The Default Onset Area is automatically created with every project. Groups can be assigned rights to the Default Onset Area in the same way as for other areas.
If a group has access to the Default Onset Area, users in that group will have that level of access to all drawings with empty or null design areas set, and when creating a new drawing such users can assign an empty value to the design area attribute.
