AVEVA™ P&ID

Managing Groups

  • Last UpdatedMar 14, 2024
  • 7 minute read

This procedure is used to manage P&ID entity groups.

Entity groups are used to manage pipe networks, signal line networks, and customized equipment symbols on the drawing canvas. There are three methods:

  • Pipe network segment groups can be viewed and modified to manage interconnected symbols and pipe segments that define a single branch on the drawing.

  • Signal line network groups can be viewed and modified to manage interconnected symbols and line segments that define a single branch on the drawing.

  • Equipment groups can be created and modified to manage customized equipment vessels or column symbols on the drawing without creating symbol definitions at the symbol catalogue. A default dummy symbol can be created using a non-plot layer design to carry the equipment tag record and other design attributes. AutoCad entities can be created to represent the equipment vessel or column symbol and added to the equipment group.

Nozzles can be connected to any of the entities included in the equipment group. Entities included in the equipment group can be modified in the same way they would be managed if they were part of a standard symbol definition.

Using this feature can potentially save the number of symbol definitions allocated to large vessel symbols that might have punctual differences in their graphical definition depending on the design workflow.

Procedures

Modify Pipe Network Segment Group

  1. Start the procedure by selecting the Managing Groups option in the AVEVA Integration group of the Manage tab.

  2. The Managing Groups grid is then displayed:

  3. Select any entity in a pipe. The sequence of entities in that pipe is then displayed in the grid:

  4. The grid shows the entity type and handle of each entity in the selected pipe.

  5. The identity of the pipe and the total number of entities in it are displayed beneath the grid.

  6. The Current Sequence column displays the current sequence number of each entity.

  7. If an entity is selected in the grid, it is highlighted in the drawing with a coloured box. For example, the pipe segment below:

  8. The current highlight colour is displayed beneath the grid in the Highlight entity with: field. If required, a different highlight colour can be selected:

  9. To modify the sequence of entities in the pipe, select the new sequence numbers in the Required Sequence column.

  10. To add an entity to a pipe, right-click on the grid and select the Add Entity option from the menu that is then displayed, then select the entity from the drawing. The selected entity is then added to the pipe and to the grid.

The selected entity is added to the grid after the entity that was selected when the grid was right-clicked on. The added entity is allocated the sequence number of the selected entity plus one, and the sequence numbers of entities after the added entity are increased by one.

  11. To remove an entity from a pipe, right-click on the entity in the grid and select the Remove Entity option from the menu that is then displayed. The entity is then removed from the pipe and the grid. The sequence numbers of the remaining entities are updated to reflect this, for example, the sequence numbers of entities after the removed entity are reduced by one.

  12. When the changes are complete, click Update, or right-click on the grid and select the Update option from the menu that is then displayed.

Modify Signal Line Segment Group

  1. Start the procedure by selecting the Managing Groups option in the AVEVA Integration group of the Manage tab.

  2. The Managing Groups grid is then displayed:

  3. Select any entity in a signal line. The sequence of entities in that signal line is then displayed in the grid:

  4. The grid shows the entity type and handle of each entity in the selected signal line.

  5. The identity of the signal line and the total number of entities in it are displayed beneath the grid.

  6. The Current Sequence column displays the current sequence number of each entity.

  7. If an entity is selected in the grid, it is highlighted in the drawing with a coloured box. For example, the signal line segment below:

  8. The current highlight colour is displayed beneath the grid in the Highlight entity with: field. If required, a different highlight colour can be selected:

  9. To modify the sequence of entities in the signal line, select the new sequence numbers in the Required Sequence column.

  10. To add an entity to a signal line, right-click on the grid and select the Add Entity option from the menu that is then displayed, then select the entity from the drawing. The selected entity is then added to the signal line and to the grid.

The selected entity is added to the grid after the entity that was selected when the grid was right-clicked on. The added entity is allocated the sequence number of the selected entity plus one, and the sequence numbers of entities after the added entity are increased by one.

  11. To remove an entity from a signal line, right-click on the entity in the grid and select the Remove Entity option from the menu that is then displayed. The entity is then removed from the signal line and the grid. The sequence numbers of the remaining entities are updated to reflect this, for example, the sequence numbers of entities after the removed entity are reduced by one.

  12. When the changes are complete, click Update, or right-click on the grid and select the Update option from the menu that is then displayed.

    Create Equipment Group

    1. Start the procedure by creating a dummy symbol that represents a generic vessel.

    2. Insert the dummy symbol on the drawing.

    3. Draw the graphical representation of the equipment vessel or column symbol using AutoCAD entities.

    4. Select the dummy symbol on the drawing.

    5. Select the Managing Groups option in the AVEVA Integration group of the Manage tab, or right-click and select the Managing Groups option from the menu that is then displayed.

The application creates a new equipment group containing the dummy equipment symbol which is displayed in the Managing Groups grid.

    6. To add the graphical representation of the equipment vessel or column symbol, right-click on the grid and select the Add Entity option from the menu that is then displayed, then select the entities from the drawing.

The selected entities are added to the Managing Groups grid.

Once the new entities have been added to the equipment group, nozzles can be directly connected to the equipment graphical representation on the drawing, or using any of the equipment options of the content right-click menu by selecting entities associated with the equipment group.

It is possible to modify entities (using editing commands) that belong to the equipment group as required (for instance drawing a new compartment for a column).

    7. To remove an entity from an equipment group, right-click on the entity in the grid and select the Remove Entity option from the menu that is then displayed. The entity is then removed from the equipment group and the grid.

    8. When the changes are complete, click Update, or right-click on the grid and select the Update option from the menu that is then displayed.
