AVEVA™ P&ID

Use of the Branch Indexing Functionality

  • Last UpdatedMay 16, 2025

This topic describes how to use the branch indexing functionality in AVEVA P&ID, including how to set it up in the AVEVA P&ID Administration Program, and its use when using off-page pipe connectors in drawings.

Setup in the AVEVA P&ID Administration Program

  1. Before using the branch indexing functionality, it must be enabled. In the Pipes Configuration Category of the AVEVA P&ID Project Administration program, open the Automatic Tag Format sub-category, and select Index Branches.

  2. The branch indexing functionality parameters must then be set up as shown here (in the green box):

  3. The Target Branch Attribute is taken from the Pipe Attributes Fields in the Labels sub-category of the Pipes Configuration Category:

Use in Off-Page Connectors

After completing the project settings, create the required pipes and off-page connectors in the AVEVA P&ID application.

This functionality supports two scenarios:

  • Use of linked off-page connectors (used to connect pipes across multiple drawings).

  • Use of unlinked off-page connectors (used to connect pipes within a single drawing).

Examples of the use of both are given below.

Note: Refer to Drawing Pipes and Connections, Insert Inline Fittings and Label and Connect Pipe and Signal Line Off-Page Connectors for details of the procedures mentioned in these examples.

Linked Off-Page Connectors

Create two pipes with off-page connectors in two separate drawings as follows:

  1. Create the first pipe in Drawing 1 and add an off-page connector to it.

  2. In Drawing 2, link a second pipe to the first using an off-page connector, and draw a connected pipe to the second off-page connector.

  3. Return to Drawing 1 and draw a pipe connected to the first off-page connector.

  4. At this point, the branch indexing should appear as illustrated in the example images, as follows:

    • Drawing 1: First off-page connector→ B001

    • Drawing 2: Linked second off-page connector→ B002

    • Pipe connected to second off-page connector→ B003

    • Pipe connected to first off-page connector→ B004

    Unlinked Off-Page Connectors

In this case, only one pipe is drawn in one drawing, connected to three regular pipes as follows:

    • Off-page connector pipe → B001

    • Connected pipes → B002, B003 and B004
