This procedure is used to import item and drawing data from Microsoft Excel spreadsheets. This data is exported to the spreadsheet and edited using separate procedures. Refer to Export Data to Excel and Edit P&ID Data in an Excel Spreadsheet.
Data can be imported into a single drawing or into a batch of drawings from which data was previously exported to a spreadsheet.
Note: Once an import is complete, the drawing must be refreshed in order to be updated by the imported data.
Note: Depending on the project settings, a password may be required to import data from Excel spreadsheets.
Associated Project Configuration Options
-
For each item group, e.g. drawing attributes, equipment, pipes etc, the column that data is imported from, for example, NEW or not, is selected in the Excel Interface Configuration Category of the AVEVA P&ID Project Administration program.
-
The location of the Excel spreadsheets is also set in the Excel Interface Configuration Category pane.
-
The lists of valid values against which imported item values are checked are stored in the location specified in the Project Configuration Category.
-
The valid values themselves are set up using the List of Values Configuration Category.
-
If data is to be imported from a batch, the EXCELIN command must be entered against the USER_COMMANDNAME user-defined directive in the Miscellaneous – Settings Sub-Category, so that the required batch file can be created.
-
A message requesting that the user confirm that the import is to take place will be displayed before the import process executes if the
-
USER_PROMPTMESSAGEBEFOREEXCELIMPORT user-defined directive on the Miscellaneous – Settings Sub-Category is set to 'Yes'. The default setting is 'No', for example, such a message will not be displayed.
Procedure
Import to a Single Drawing
-
Start the procedure selecting the Excel Import option in the Import/Export group of the Manage tab.
-
Depending on the project configuration, a message requesting that the user confirm that the import is to take place may be displayed at this point.
-
The data is validated on import against the valid values set up for the project using the Project Administration program.
Details of the import process are displayed in a window, e.g. its progress and any errors and warning. For example:

Any errors and inconsistencies are written to a file, ErrorLog.html, in the following location:
C:\AVEVA\P&ID\PROJECT\name of project\Vantage\
For example:

Rows in the spreadsheet containing valid changes displayed in green. Rows in the spreadsheet containing errors are displayed in red.
Data in rows containing errors is not imported. To correct errors, use the Edit P&ID Data in an Excel Spreadsheet procedure, and carry out the import procedure again to import the corrected data.
For details of the layout and contents of the spreadsheet, refer to Format of the Excel Interface Spreadsheet.
Import to Multiple Drawings
This procedure is used to import data into every drawing in a selected folder (from which data has previously been exported to a spreadsheet) by creating and running a batch file.
-
Start the procedure by selecting the Make Excel Import Batch File option in the Import/Export group of the Manage tab.
-
The Select files to process Excel in dialog is then displayed.

The dialog lists all the drawings in the project Drawings folder. Select the drawings that data is to be imported to by checking the checkboxes next to their names. If all drawings are to be imported to, check Select All checkbox.
Select OK.
-
The batch file is then created in the same folder as the folder containing the selected drawings:

-
The batch file can then run using standard Windows facilities, e.g. from Windows Explorer. All the AutoCAD sessions must be closed when running the batch file.

-
The data is validated on import against the valid values set up for the project using the Project Administration program. Any errors and inconsistencies are written to a file, ErrorLog.html, in the following location:
C:\AVEVA\P&ID\PROJECT\name of project\Vantage
For example:

Rows in spreadsheets containing valid changes displayed in green. Rows in spreadsheets containing errors are displayed in red.
Data in rows containing errors is not imported. To correct errors, use the Edit P&ID Data in an Excel Spreadsheet procedure, and carry out the import procedure again to import the corrected data.
For details of the layout and contents of the spreadsheets, refer to Format of the Excel Interface Spreadsheet.
