The Catalogue database which is a reference database contains a catalogue of the standard components where component selection is provided through specifications that dictate which catalogue components can be used.

It may contain a single 'universal' catalogue, but it will more commonly contain a general catalogue plus one or more specialized catalogues specific to particular design functions.
