Options Tab

The Options tab consists of the following sections:

  • Tolerances

  • Clash Options

  • Laser Options

  • Presentations

  • Clash Colors

  • Clashes Ignored Within

Tolerances

As well as distinguishing between hard and soft clashing items, the checking utility recognizes three categories of clash between them, depending on how far the two primitives intrude on each other's allocated space.

Touch Gap

A touch where the primitives either overlap by less than the amount needed to cause a clash or are separated at their closest point by less than a specified distance which can mean that one item is resting upon another as intended, or it can indicate a problem.

Overlap

A physical clash where the primitive volumes overlap by more than a specified amount which means that a definite interference exists.

Clearance

A clearance where the primitives are separated at their closest point by more than the amount necessary to constitute a touch but less than a specified clearance distance which represents a near miss, which you may want to investigate.

These three classes are illustrated below for the clash specifications:

  • Touch limits: 5mm overlap to 2mm gap

  • Clearance limit: 8mm

so that the following criteria apply:

  • If the items overlap by more than 5mm, a clash is reported

  • If the items overlap by less than 5mm, a touch is reported

  • If the items do not overlap but are separated by less than 2mm, a touch is reported

  • If the items are separated by more than 2mm but less than 8mm, a clearance is reported

  • If the items are separated by more than 8mm, no interference is found.

Clash Options

Select an option from the drop-down Clash Options menu to allow you to specify if:

  • Touches are...

Included or Ignored

  • Clashes within branch...

Are Included, Ignore if Adjacent or Are Ignored

  • Connections...

Are Included, Are Ignored or With Spec Are Ignored

To set the clash midpoint position to On, select Clash Midpoint Position check box.

Laser Options

When testing for interactive clashes between the model and point cloud data that has a spatial occupancy map created, you are able to select between two alternative testing methods from the drop-down list:

  • The Cell method highlights the boxes in the map where clashing takes place, allowing you to quickly identify areas of concern within a model. The Cell method is quick because it requests less information from the Laser Modelling System (LMS) where the scanned referenced data is sourced.

  • The Exact method provides more detailed results, showing exactly where the AVEVA E3D Design geometry clashes with the laser model. The Exact method requires detailed point cloud data from the third party LMS, it can be slower to identify clashes, particularly in larger methods.

Both methods are driven from AVEVA E3D Design but also explicitly invoke clash detection functionality within the LMS.

Presentations

Grouping clashes per branch and then clashes against the same obstruction is a common requirement. Selecting the Group Clash/Obstruction check box presents the results using the Clash and Obstruction columns as default.

Other presentation aids are also available to you, Clash Item Aid, Clash Obstruction Aid, Clash Position Aid, Obstruction Visibility and Capping.

Obstruction Visibility

allows the drawing of obstruction volumes to be switch on and off and acts on the next check function and not immediately on the view.

Capping

Allows capping to be switched On or Off.

Clash Colors

You can change the colors displayed in the 3D graphical view for the Major Clash Items, Obstruction Items and the View Background. Click on any of the three options to display a color palette window. Select the required color and click Dismiss.

Clashes Ignored Within

Clashes are normally reported for each pair of design primitives, piping components or steelwork components that interfere, with the exception of interferences between the following pairs of items.

  • Primitives belonging to the same equipment.

  • Two structure or substructure primitives having the same owner.

  • Two piping components that are connected.

  • A piping component and the nozzle to which it is connected.

  • Any component or primitive that has its obstruction value set to zero

You can also choose to ignore other elements, select the required check boxes.

Save / Restore

Click Reset System Defaults to restore all the system defaults back to the original installation settings.

User Settings allows you to click Save to any changes made during a session to a file. Click Restore during a session changes the settings back to your saved settings.
