Imported CSV files be in UTF‑8 text format. However, Excel does not save CSV files to this format. Also, if Excel is being used with a regional setting that is not en‑US, commas might be replaced with other characters.

To ensure that the CSV file is properly formatted when created or edited in Excel

  1. In Excel, perform a Save As and select CSV as the file type.

  2. If you are prompted whether to leave out incompatible features when saving the file, like the example shown below, select Yes.

  3. Close the CSV file in Excel.

  4. If you are prompted whether to save your changes to the file, like the example shown below, select Don't Save (the file was already saved in step 2).

  5. Open the CSV file in a text editor that is capable of saving the file in UTF‑8 format.

  6. If characters other than commas are being used as delimiters, replace them with commas.

  7. Save the file as a CSV file in UTF-8 format.
