AVEVA™ Process Simulation

Mode summary for the G2 example simulation

  • Last UpdatedJun 17, 2025
  • 2 minute read

The following table includes the mode summary for both the conceptual and detailed engineering simulations to illustrate their differences. We use Fluid Flow mode only as an intermediate step for moving the detailed solution from Process mode to Dynamics mode. Therefore, we do not include it in the mode summary. You can find additional details about each mode in the following sections.

Process Mode (Conceptual)

Process Mode (Detailed)

Dynamics Mode (Detailed)

Purpose

Create a mass and energy balance of the overall process.

Create a mass and energy balance of the overall process and design the column, reboiler, and condenser.

Validate the process control strategy.

Column

Calculate and verify the number of stages, location of the feed stage, and the reflux and boilup ratios.

Determine the Column diameter.

Perform a stage-wise dynamic mass and energy balance to calculate the pressure and stage compositions.

Source (Feed)

Set the feed flowrate and composition.

Set the feed flowrate and composition.

Observe the process response to a change in feed flowrate.

Source (Refrigerant)

Not applicable

Set the flowrate and feed properties of the refrigerant.

Set the flowrate and feed properties of the refrigerant.

Source (Steam)

Not applicable

Set the flowrate and feed properties of the steam.

Set the flowrate and feed properties of the steam.

Condenser

Not applicable

Set the shell-side and tube-side outlet vapor fractions to calculate the required heat duty, area, and refrigerant flowrate.

Calculate the duty from the process conditions.

Reflux Drum

Not applicable

Separate the overhead vapor product from the liquid reflux stream and specify the top pressure of the Column.

Calculate the drum pressure and liquid level.

Reboiler

Not applicable

Specify the shell-side and tube-side vapor fractions to calculate the required steam supply and supply boilup return to the Column.

Calculate duty from the stream flow rate and heat transfer surface.
