The Wilson equation was the first to incorporate the concept of local composition. The basic idea is that, because of differences in intermolecular forces, the composition in the neighborhood of a specific molecule in solution will differ from that of the bulk liquid. The two parameters per binary are, at least in principle, associated with the degree to which each molecule can produce a change in the composition of its local environment.
