UBM (Use Based Maintenance)

  • Last UpdatedMay 20, 2025
  • 2 minute read

Use-based maintenance is a type of maintenance in which preventive maintenance actions are "guided" on the basis of a specified use period. For instance, changing a car's gearbox oil after 12,500 miles. Because the action is guided by the use period, UBM would only be of use if there is a good overview of the condition over time. In this respect, the spread over useful life must be restricted. A further condition is observed in that condition over the course of time decreases, which means that the failure level tends to increase.

A UBM action is created in the same way as an FBM action. Three tabs can be completed for a UBM action. These tabs are General, Preventive and Costs respectively. The tabs General and Costs are completed in the same way as with the FBM action and will therefore not be described here.

Clustered Maintenance linked UBM action

A UBM action which is linked to a CLM has a different icon in the FMECA to tree-view, this is to inform the user that the UBM action is linked to a CLM action.

Tabs

The data for FBM can be edited in the Property Grid, or the Property Screen, which contains several tabs. Each tab will be explained separately in the following topics. Some tabs are identical for the various types of maintenance, so images used in the explanation may be reused.

Property Grid

All information entered in the Properties screen, can also be entered directly into the Property Grid. The meaning of the fields will be explained per tab of the Properties Screen in the following topics, which correspond to the sections in the Property Grid. The function of the fields is identical.
