About MEI Calculation

The Maintenance Excellence Index (MEI) is a metric used to measure the effectiveness of the maintenance operations and management. It is a comprehensive score that takes into account a variety of factors, including asset reliability and cost. The MEI is used to:

  • Identify the areas for improvement

  • Benchmark performance against industry standards

  • Compare performance across different organizations

The maintenance teams use the MEI to assess their performance and ensure that their operations are running efficiently and effectively. The following is the formula used for calculating the MEI.

MEI

Where:

  • Price of Non-Conformance (PONC) = Production loss + FBM

  • Estimated Time Between Failure (ETBF) = MTTF (Mean Time To Failure)

  • Estimated Time between Conformance (ETBC) = MTTF from simulation

  • Annual Price of Conformance (POC) = PONC/ETBC + Annual Preventive maintenance costs

Calculations used to generate the MEI report:

All calculations are as per the Failure cause.

  • Calculation 1

PONC = (MTTRFBM * Production loss per hour) + Total CostFBM

Annual PONC = PONC / MTTF

  • Calculation 2

Annual POC = All UBM actions cost per year (cost / interval)

All CBM actions cost per year (cost / interval)

All CBM-F actions cost per year (simulation result)

  • Calculation 3

Annual Consequence cost POC = PONC / MTTFsimulation

MEI = (Annual PONC – Annual Consequence cost POC) / (Annual POC + Annual Consequence costPOC)

Therefore, Maintenance Excellence Index (MEI) offers a systematic framework to evaluate, benchmark, and improve the maintenance practices. By leveraging the MEI, the organizations or companies can optimize their maintenance operations, reduce costs, enhance equipment reliability, and ultimately improve their overall operational efficiency and competitiveness.
