The property profile graph provides a visual representation of the change in a crude
property over the boiling point or yield range of any selected crudes. Crudes may
be selected in the database view or may have been generated with the Show on Graph option (
), selected in the generation module. See How to use the database...............
If a property profile exists for the selected property, the profile will be displayed on the graph as a continuous curve.

Tip
The profile graph always shows the instantaneous values of a property for an infinitesimal cut around the boiling point on the x-axis, whereas the residue graph always shows an integrated or cut value. See.Residue profile graph.
In depth
The traditional approach for creating crude descriptions is by using property profiles,
which cover the narrow fraction boiling point property value over the whole boiling
range of the crude oil.
Simple methods for generating property profiles โ for example, using smoothing splines
to join mid-boiling point property values on measured distillation fractions โ will
lead to property profiles which, although they may give good matches to the distillation
fraction property values, are not guaranteed to match the whole crude or residue values
that have been measured. This requirement of crude property 'balancing' (or 'recutting
for whole crude values') is important in ensuring that the crude description is valid
over the whole boiling range as well as for the distillation fractions. Methods for
generating crude descriptions need to take these values into account when generating
the property profiles.
The product's crude data management tools implicitly use representations of crude
property data that require all relevant data to be taken into account. In property
profile generation, a whole crude value will be used just as much as, or in some cases
more than, the values for distillation fractions. The question "Does this property
profile recut to give the right whole crude value?" is not as relevant in this holistic
approach as in less sophisticated spline-based approaches, since any property profiles
seen will be optimally consistent (as far as possible) with all the relevant input
data.
