Cut field configuration

The main numerical columns that can be displayed in Assay are cut columns. These correspond to property values for given cuts on the crude oil. For instance:

  • The API density of the whole crude.

  • The aromatics content by volume of the 150-250°C kerosene cut.

  • The asphaltene content of the vacuum residue 1050°F+.

To configure a cut field, you are required to provide five parameters, as illustrated in the following table.

Property

The property chosen using a Property Control. Use the first part of the control to choose the property from a list. Use the remaining parts of the control, if these exist, to configure additional editable parameters of the property.

Density

Cut

The cut for the property. You can choose either a preset or custom cut.

Preset cuts correspond to standard product streams. The list of available preset cuts may be configured from the Standard Cuts section of the Preferences dialog. Each preset cut displays predefined start and end boiling points in the Cut control. See Standard cuts.

Custom cuts correspond to arbitrary product streams whose start and end boiling points you specifically define. To configure a custom cut, select Custom from the drop down list of cuts. Edit the range of the cut in-place using the start and end fields provided. The Start and End fields additionally support the values IBP and FBP, corresponding to the initial and final boiling points of the crude respectively. You should use these values when entering whole crude, condensate and residue cuts.

The boiling point range of any predefined cut may be edited, just as for a custom cut. Indeed, this has the effect of changing the predefined cut to a custom cut.

Whole Crude (IBP-FBP)

Unit

The unit of measurement in which calculated values are reported. Any unit supported by the chosen property may be selected from the Unit combo box. For a list of commonly occurring properties and their associated units. See the Appendix Units.

Format

The number format in which calculated values are reported. Calculated values may be shown in any one of a number of numerical formats, including a fixed number of decimal places, a fixed number of significant figures, or scientific notation.
