Add a new unit of measure

Open the unit manager by clicking the units button Icon units button. Showing a vertical gauge with a magnifying glass and the word Units in the Managers group of the Reference Data ribbon tab.

Then:

  1. Choose the unit category to which to add a unit

    Choose the unit category to which you wish to add a unit. Selecting this on the left hand side of the unit manager will configure the right hand side of the editor to show information about the chosen unit category. For example, Accleration.

  2. Add a new unit

    Add a unit by pressing the add unit button Icon add unit button. Showing vertical scale and a plus symbol . The right hand side of the editor will be reconfigured to allow you to enter the details of the new unit.

  3. Enter details for the new unit

    Choose a name for the new unit, and enter it into the Unit Name box. For example, metres per second squared.

    Choose a symbol for the new unit, and enter it into the Unit Symbol box. For example, m/s2.

    Optionally, enter a description of this unit into the Description box. For example, The SI Unit for acceleration.

  4. Define the relationship of the new unit to existing units

    You must also enter the relationship of this new unit to the base unit (or any other defined unit).

    Type in an appropriate formula into the Formula box, which corresponds to the method of calculating your new unit from the base unit. Use the symbol X to represent the value. You may use standard arithmetical operators (including exponentials, logarithms and trigonometric functions). Note, however, that this formula must be invertible, so the formula must contain only a single X.

    For example, to convert from gravity to metres per second squared, you need to multiply by 9.80665.

    In this example, you would enter X*9.80665 into the box. Full details of the arithmetical, mathematical and logical operations allowed in formulae are given in the Appendix. See Writing formulae.

    Note that you can choose the formula to be expressed in terms of a unit X which is most convenient from the drop down box at the top of the formula section. The formula is not restricted to being in terms of the base unit.
